Ideal body weight formulas were built for clinical dosing rather than for setting personal goals, which makes them useful as a reference point rather than a target to chase.
This calculator shows the Devine formula result for your height along with the wider healthy weight range based on BMI 18.5 to 24.9.

Frequently asked questions
How is ideal body weight calculated?
This calculator uses the Devine formula: 50 kg for a man or 45.5 kg for a woman at 5 feet, plus 2.3 kg for every additional inch of height.
Is ideal body weight the same as a healthy weight?
No. It is a single reference figure, while the healthy weight range based on BMI 18.5–24.9 spans roughly 20 kg at average adult heights.
Why are there different formulas?
Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi all produce slightly different results. They were designed for medical calculations, so small differences are expected and not meaningful.
Does the formula account for muscle?
No. It uses height and sex only, so muscular people and athletes often sit above their reference figure while being perfectly healthy.
Should I aim for my ideal body weight?
Treat it as a landmark, not a goal. A weight inside the healthy range that you can maintain comfortably is a better target than one specific number.
Does the formula work for children?
No. Children and teenagers are assessed with growth charts accounting for age and sex, because their bodies are still developing.
